Mathematics

The central purpose of the Math materials in the early years is to lay the foundation for later cognitive development and to prepare for the gradual transition to abstract thinking. The primary value of these earlier activities in mathematics is found in the way they transform ideas into actions on concrete materials. Montessori students use hands-on learning materials that make abstract concepts clear and concrete.

Our Math curriculum is firmly based on learning through experience. Children use a wide variety of carefully constructed materials which lead them to an understanding of the value and sequence of the numbers 1 to 10. From there they are introduced to larger numbers and the concept of grouping numbers into tens, hundreds and thousands. Four and five year olds are introduced to the basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) at a concrete level to help them understand why these concepts are useful and what they really mean.
